General grade polystyrene (GPPS)
Polystyrene (PS) is polymerized from styrene monomer (SM) and can be synthesized through various synthetic methods. In industry, bulk polymerization and suspension polymerization are mainly used. The English name for polystyrene is Polystyrene, abbreviated as PS (hereinafter referred to as PS). PS is a thermoplastic amorphous resin, mainly divided into general grade polystyrene (GPPS, commonly known as transparent benzene), impact resistant grade polystyrene (HIPS, commonly known as modified benzene), and foamed grade polystyrene (EPS).
GPPS characteristics
GPPS is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and glossy, transparent particle. Lightweight, affordable, low water absorption, good adhesion, dimensional stability, good electrical performance, transparent product, and easy processing.
GPPS is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aliphatic ketones, and esters, but can only swell in acetone. Can withstand the effects of certain mineral oils, organic acids, bases, salts, lower alcohols, and their aqueous solutions. Low water absorption, able to maintain its mechanical properties and dimensional stability in humid environments. Excellent electrical performance, high volume resistance and surface resistance, and unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, as well as corona discharge. The radiation resistance is also very good.
The main drawbacks of GPPS are its brittle and easily cracked texture, low impact strength, poor heat resistance, and inability to withstand boiling water. It can only be used at lower temperatures and loads. Poor sunlight resistance, flammable. When burning, it turns black and has a special odor.
Universal grade polystyrene can be used for daily necessities, electrical, instrument casings, toys, lighting fixtures, household appliances, stationery, cosmetic containers, indoor and outdoor decorations, fruit trays, optical components (such as prisms, lenses), lenses, window mirrors and molds, car lights, telecommunications accessories, electric frequency container films, high-frequency insulation materials, TV containers, waveguides, chemical containers, etc. Suspension polymerization resin can be made into foam plastics with different densities, which can be used as heat insulation, sound insulation, shock prevention, floating, packaging materials, cork substitutes, pre foam body can be used as water filtering medium and light concrete, and low foam plastic can be made into synthetic wood for furniture, etc.
High impact polystyrene (HIPS) can be injected or extruded into a variety of products, suitable for household appliances, electrical appliances, instrument accessories, refrigerator lining, plates, televisions, radio recorders, telephone shells, cultural and educational supplies, toys, packaging containers, daily necessities, furniture, tableware, trays, tableware, structural foam products, etc.
Forming and processing of polystyrene (PS)
Polystyrene has good fluidity, good processing performance, easy coloring, and good dimensional stability. Various parts can be processed using methods such as injection molding, extrusion molding, blow molding, foaming, hot forming, bonding, coating, welding, machining, printing, etc. Especially suitable for injection molding, materials can generally be used directly without drying during injection molding. But in order to improve the quality of the product, it can be pre dried for 1-2 hours in a 55 ℃~70 ℃ blast oven. The specific processing conditions are roughly as follows: the barrel temperature is around 200 ℃, the mold temperature is 60-80 ℃, the injection temperature is 170 ℃ to 220 ℃, and the injection pressure ratio is 1.6-4.0. The formed product should be treated at a constant temperature of 70 ℃ for 2-4 hours in an infrared lamp or blast oven.
